Brown
Eastside Branch: Per Susan Mankowski: I was listening to First
Coast Connect this morning (10/8/18), and there was a segment on the first
annual We Rise Festival that is this Saturday at Brotherhood
Eastside. Nick Thompson was talking about the neighborhood and the
revitalization efforts that led to the We Rise Festival and said something
about (and I’m paraphrasing slightly) people need to visit the Eastside Library
to see the energy in the neighborhood. Mr. Thompson even mentions Shawn
Norton by name as a direct influence on the neighborhood and the kids who
visit the library! Way to go, Shawn! I love when the library has unsolicited
positive response from the communities we serve. And this is much deserved. A
major shout out to Shawn and the rest of the EB team!
Main - Center for Adult Learning: Today in
CAL, Yancy McQueen told me (Tammy Owens) and
Katie Devanny that he couldn't believe he had written a formal paper for his
instructor, Katie Bark, and that he was spending so much time editing
and tweaking it to make it better. He told us that a few months ago, he was too
afraid to write anything because he didn't have confidence in himself
to do so. He wanted us to know how much he appreciates what we all do down
here.
Main – Special Collections: Catherine (Currier) on the 4th
floor at the Main Library was exceptional in helping me access the information
I was seeking!
Murray
Hill Branch: I was surprised by
the size of the branch and the staff was extremely kind and
the facilities were excellent. I’m so grateful for all that the library does.
Southeast
Branch: Linda (Bryan) was really great and helped me
out tremendously and was extremely patient with me.

MAIN –
Security, Fiction, & Circulation: It was so
welcoming to be greeted by two employees as I entered …I went up to the second
floor to look at DVD's and was greeted by an employee at the desk. She made me
aware of the new arrivals (all on waiting list) but was encouraging about the
materials that were available.
I did find a few discs that I planned to check-out and was
about to head for the elevator when a new employee came on duty and questioned
me about finding what I needed. Both of those employees on the second floor
were smiling and courteous and seemed interested in me being a customer at
their library.
When I checked out I accidentally gave the employee my
driver's license rather than my library card. When she checked out the material
and handed my license back to me I realized what I had done. She so politely
had found my information and told me that she was able to check out the
material without my library card.
As I left the library, again, I was greeted at the security
station. As I waited on my husband to join me to leave the building I noticed
that same security person so professionally deal with a person who had been
causing a disturbance. She very courteously "defused" what could have
been a bad situation with the customer.
The last two visits have been so amazingly improved - perhaps
because of our new director. The downtown library is just about my favorite
place in Jacksonville and I am so proud to be able to be encouraging about
improvements I have experienced. Finding such courteous and helpful
"friends" at the library made me a happy customer.
Pablo Creek Branch: Staff was extremely friendly, welcoming, and professional. Couldn't ask for better service. Thanks very much.
South Mandarin Branch: Adrian Johnson goes above and beyond in providing excellent customer service.
SST @ UPK: I made an appointment for tech help at the University Park Branch but misunderstood my time. The tech services librarian (Nicole Rivera) saw me anyway making a new appointment while I was at the library and then helped me solve my computer problem very effectively. I was so pleased by the courtesy and help given.
University Park Branch: I tried to renew but was not in the system. However, I am pleased to have
an active card again. The staff was very friendly and helpful. It was wonderful
seeing so many children and youth at the library! We must keep our libraries
open!

Argyle
Branch: Christina (Pope) was very upbeat and helpful. She was very
happy to share information and help us out.
Beaches Branch: The lady that issued my card was extremely friendly,
pleasant and informative. I learned so much from her and afterwards she turned
my day around and I was just, well, happy. Thanks so much for everything and
keep up the exemplary work.*
Highlands
Branch: Nicest, most informative government employee I’ve ever dealt with! Much
better than my library experiences when I lived in Atlanta. Very happy I got a
library card.*
Southeast Branch: Linda
(Bryan), I sincerely thank you for your
help; your positive and moving, can-do attitude is remarkable. It made my day
to see that someone is so caring. Many thank you's! …Carisia (Rooney)
was also helpful! Both of you ladies: please keep up the great work!
Webb Wesconnett
Branch: I want you to know that Ayesha (Turner) at Webb library went above
the call of duty in helping me. The library system should be very proud of her
that she is such a positive, helpful employee. Please let her know that she is
appreciated. Thank you.

Argyle Branch: Tracy (Mills) was patient and very helpful. She answered
all my questions and it was a pleasure to be assisted by her. I just wanted you
to be aware of such a great employee you have (but I'm sure you already know).
Highlands Branch: Oh I
wish I remembered the lady that helped me. She was so friendly and
helpful. She made it easy to sign up for
a card!
Main Library –
Special Collections: Today I requested a copy of a page in The Florida Times-Union from 1896.
Librarian John Wilson was very helpful and fulfilled my request with
great speed and quality. Great customer service!
Murray Hill Branch: We have been to the library twice now
since we received my son's card a week ago. He is six years old. The staff is
amazing and beyond helpful. They have fun conversations with my son and make
the experience very personable. We look forward to going. (I have not been in
close to 20 years.) My son and I have
"date days"... they now include lunch and the library. Thank you to
the staff…for helping me make these fun memories with my son! (Shirdellah
Grouix, Margaret Esposito, Douglas Fair, Akeem Adell, Mary Fletcher, Camera
Bragdon, and Albina Akramova.)
South Mandarin Branch: My 7 y/o
triplets and I participated at the Books to Bricks summer program and Mrs. Angela Richman was wonderful.
She was well prepared and kept the audience engaged all the time. The room was
full of children with their parents. At the end of the presentation she made a
game for the children and they loved it. I also liked the way she structured
her presentation to leave time for the children to build with Legos and express
what they learned with their creativity... She emphasized it
was a group activity and all children built together. The theme was opera, they
built a theater with different stages. Now my girl, Sofia, is asking me to learn
how to sing and take some classes. I think it is because Mrs. Angela
made a positive impact and interest on my girl’s heart. Thank you for the
program and thank you, Mrs. Angela, for your Awesome presentation!

Beaches Branch: Librarian Mary
Wilson was most courteous and helpful during my visit on June 13 and gave me a
tour of the library collections, placed a book on hold for me, refreshed my
understanding of the online capabilities to which I have access, and made me
thankful that we have such good people and facilities at the Beaches Branch Library.
Main Library – Circulation: I
would like to commend Mr. (Corey) Scott, the…gentleman at the front desk, who
assisted me getting a library card. I recently relocated to Jacksonville and he
showed exemplary customer service skills by explaining the requirements for
obtaining a card and providing me with a temporary use card. I have been to
several branches and he is the first person to educate me on the options.
Congratulations to Jacksonville Public Library for having an experienced and
knowledgeable employee.
Pablo Creek
Branch: Jonathan (Sandbach): Thank you from Angie and Alex! Jonathan, the youth
librarian, was amazing and patient making slime with the kids at the PCR
Kickoff party.
Regency Square Branch: …on June 8th…a staff member named Cindy (Mathieson)
provided me with much needed assistance at the copier machine. I was impressed
with her attitude of not giving up.
South Mandarin Branch: We love coming to story hour when Christie (Rogers) does
it.

Kudos From Customers - April 2018
Highlands Branch: (Staff's name not given): The
staff was very patient and polite. I obtained cards and bags for my three
school age daughters. The staff member advised the girls of all the policies
with me. It made them feel a sense of responsibility and ownership. It was a
great experience for my family. Thank You, Jacksonville Library system.
Main Library & Collection Development: (Erica Brown, Main; Charlene Adkins & Jill Hale, Collection Development): I just wanted to thank those who order the books. I had suggested a purchase of a book I could not afford to purchase for my son anytime soon. I received an email back promptly and then within a week it was on the website to place on hold showing they were ordering it. It really means a lot that ya'll are willing to help me keep my 12 year old reading! Thanks again!
San Marco Branch: (Lilia Simonton, Sandy Ostroski, Davi Harmon, Anthony Baltiero, Robin Rogers, Selena Mann, Anthony Villareal, Juanita Searles, Marilyn Maron, Selena Mann, & Montae Latham): I needed special care on multiple visits. I didn't ask but each librarian insisted on taking care of me personally and assuring me I understood the process. Very well done.
Southeast Branch: (Carisia Rooney, Mia Clark, Sally Doherty, Alfreda Whitfield, Crystal Khadkahodie, Kim Smith, Kate Zakharov, Debra Wainwright, Hunter Alley, Gina Scott, Erika Knapp, Raquel Soto, Carol Bunker, Mia Brack, Shaina Ford, Anna Brown, Ysabella Banta, Pat Klingler, Andrea Markle, Linda Bryan, Abby McGeathy, Mary Smith, Debbie Gossman, Shirley Lui, & John Manahan): I would also like to let you know what a joy it was to find that your library is just what a patron loves. Quiet, knowledgeable staff, a large number of all types of reading materials and up to date technology. A really bright spot in Jacksonville! We’ve only moved South three months ago.

Highlands Branch: Front desk staff was extremely helpful in
getting me an educator card. They quickly and efficiently answered all of my questions
and got it processed. Great staff!
Mandarin Branch: The young man that signed me up was very polite and knowledgeable.
South Mandarin Branch: I had a great experience at the library; I never expect to get service like this. All the persons who worked there are so polite and helpful and can answer a million questions and help you out in everything without hesitating. And I would like to name the person who helped me in choosing 15 kids books; her name is Angela Richman. She is so nice and patient and loves her job and makes things so easy for me after explaining every little detail.
Webb Wesconnett Branch: There are two employees that I have encountered as well as heard them assisting others within the library, and I must say they are wonderful, knowledgeable, professional, kind, and patient. Ms. Janice (Adams) and Ms. Tomario (Lewis) are what good customer service is all about and they should be recognized for a job well done!
Westbrook Branch: Mrs. Thatcher, a regular customer of Susan Williamson, is an elderly woman with health issues. So to make things easier on her, Susan regularly checks Fantastic Fiction and creates lists of books that Ms. Thatcher might be interested in and has not read. Through this she creates a hold list so that Mrs. Thatcher has at least 20 mysteries and fantasies each time she visits the branch.

Brentwood Branch: I
changed libraries when my regular library of many years was undergoing repairs.
… The staffs at this library (Kathleen Krizek, LaKendra Hicks, Milicia
Thomas, Aquilla Stewart, Jackie Perry, David Stevenson, & Christina Garmon)
are so friendly, knowledgeable and can either answer any question I have or
will find the answer. It is a great place and of historical significance to me
as this is the library I came to as a kid after the Springfield library closed
and this library replaced the old Brentwood Theater.
Main - Makerspace: Re: Guitar
lessons: I have attended beginning classes now with Jay Brasfield for a
year and have enjoyed every moment. I feel I have learned a lot, so much that I
would like to learn more. If it is possible I would love for Jay to teach an
intermediate class so that I can continue the learning process. I've spoken to
Jay about it and he seems to be open to the idea. I hope that this can become a
reality. Thank you in advance.
South
Mandarin Branch: I would like to
compliment two of the employees there. Ralph Henderson and Angela Richman are
just without a doubt two of the most professional and helpful folks I’ve ever
encountered. They have both gone above and beyond to help me several times and
are always ready with a friendly smile. It is wonderful that they represent
this library with such helpful attitudes and professionalism. They both deserve
a huge pat on the back.
Southeast
Branch: Wanted to thank/commend the tech expert (Nicholas Beardsley) with
whom I had a 1-on-1 Tech Tutoring session at SE Branch…. He was exceptionally
helpful and a delight to work with. Please keep this program going and
recognize how professional this individual is. Thank you.

Kudos From Customers - January 2018
Kudos have always included compliments from customers that name employees specifically; however, thus far only generalized excellent service at branches has been commented on so this month an exception is made:
Argyle
Branch: Great friendly service, I was very impressed.
Beaches
Branch: Everyone I had occasion to meet with was extremely pleasant,
knowledgeable and helpful. I enjoy the peace and quiet surrounded by so many
trips I can read about. I was also told about the "hold" system.
Pablo Creek Branch: Was amazed about the excellent customer service
provided! Definitely 5 stars. The lady was amazing!
Regency Square Branch: My kids and I had a wonderful experience at the
Regency Library. Thank you for making us feel welcome.

Main – Genealogy: I suppose
I am a little slanted in their favor since I use their expertise so much but I
vote for Genealogy/Special Collections for Department of the Decade, at
least. (Genealogy: Laura Minor, Christa Snow, James Brasfield,
Catherine Currier, and John Wilson.)
Main – Makerspace and SST –
E-Services: Regarding classes offered in the Jax Makerspace: I recently
took a sewing class (Nancy Swain) and thought it was just fantastic.
Regarding the E-service's certification program: I live in Springfield and was
participating in the computer classes working on my certification. The
certification process got me to check out different libraries because the class
I needed wasn't offered at Main at a time I could attend. I was quite pleased
that I had a chance to check out another library. Overall, the library is doing
great work.
Mandarin Branch: Mrs.
(Isabel) Santiago, Wanted to thank you for being at the Mandarin
Library. My great granddaughter needed a science experiment and you told
us about the carnations. Thought I would share one thing from the weekend
when we got back from Winn-Dixie with the flowers. I told her to go ahead and
get the water in vases. Well Isabella got three Mason glasses instead of
vases out and cut the stems and showed me the flowers floating on top of the
water; oh boy! So back to the store for more flowers. I will never
forget. May you and yours have a safe and happy new year. Oh, Isabella got a 95 on her project.
Pablo Creek Branch: I am
extremely satisfied with all the staff at Pablo Creek Library. However, I am
especially pleased to have interacted with an employee of yours named, Jason
Enoex. The guy was INCREDIBLE! He has gone out of his way numerous times to
talk with me, show me to the right resources or help me with my searches. The
guy is amazing. He always stops what he is doing, greets me with a smile and
asks me how he can help today. He is personable, professional,
knowledgeable,... the guy always seems to be at the library and always seems to
be working hard. It is so nice to see such a positive and motivated individual!
He has made some difficult work much easier by patiently explaining what I need
to do and where I can find the information I am looking for. ...
West Branch: I have visited the Chaffee Road Library every week for many years and have come to know the staff there very well. They are all very polite, eager to assist me with any requests, problems, and suggestions to make sure that my visits each week are memorable. Just wanted Human Relations to know that you have an awesome staff at the West Branch. (WST staff: Sharon Kirkes, Eve Harm, John Jessee, Dana Curry, Julie Horton, Bill Figlietti, Shannon Buchanan, Latisha Woolbright, Jessica Carpenter, Melodie Brunson, Jessica Roling, Kelsey Groth, & Stephanie Brantly,)

Beaches: I
use this library very often and Gail (Blumberg) has always been very helpful. Any problem
I have she is always right there to assist. This library is very fortunate to
have her as an employee. If books aren't available, she helps me locate which
library has them and orders them for me. If the book isn't available
anywhere, she puts in a request to see if it can be ordered.
Main - Makerspace: (Sara Radovic & Shawana Brooks) I was born and raised in Jacksonville but moved away for college. I stayed away for an additional 15 years but I moved back to Jacksonville ten years ago. I had never been to the downtown library. I was introduced to it through Markerspace. I doubt I will ever visit another library. I have now been to every opening and look forward to attending events here. Markerspace has reminded me of why I always loved the library. Now I'm back to visiting the library to read magazines and newspapers, to check out books and audiobooks, or to just go and have a quiet space to read. I forgot how much I loved to read! Not only has Markerspace given me a place to go experience amazing art and culture but it's given me back a part of me that I was missing. So thank you, Jacksonville Public Library System for the amazing work you are doing there!
Pablo Creek: My son and I visited this location today and it's by far the BEST location that I've been to out of all the JAX Public Library System!. I love it here! Storytime was amazing with Tristan (Denmark) and the staff here were so nice & interactive with my son - which means a lot to me! I will certainly be back every week with my son--every week!
South Mandarin: I wanted to say thank you to Angela (Richman) for taking the time to show me several resources on the library website that I can used for my daughter. I had no idea that all of these resources existed and she offered to show them to me which I really appreciated. She should give a class on this every now and then on Saturdays for parents to discover all of the tutoring resources, testing resources and scholarship resources, etc. Thanks again, Angela, for all of the information you shared with me today!
Wilowbranch: (Scott Adams, Ryan Reid, Jason Brown, Isabelle Pierre, Michael Cooper, Troy Eittreim, Joe Gaskin, & Susan Koedel), & Mary Swinney) I just want to thank you guys for all that you do for the community. I have 4 children who have been going to the library weekly for story time, to load up on books for my older children and myself. The children’s programming has been so good--from parties to the summer reading incentives. I truly appreciate the friendly atmosphere and attentive staff. Thank you guys for making my job as mom a little easier!

There were only three branches from all of JPL that had compliments for individual staff.
Pablo
Creek Branch: I want to thank Mandy Elliott for help on
Ancestry.com. She was able to find the customer's father and knew what she was
doing. Thanks also to Jason Enoex who
watched so he could learn...
Southeast
Branch: I want to…give a librarian a comment. Her name is Kimberly Smith. She was such a great help and she had so much
patience with us. I really enjoy her. If everyone was kind hearted and caring
like her this world would be a better place.

Edgewood. Thank you for hearing me Mrs. Sheila Brooks.
Mandarin Branch: I wish to praise
Frances (Wickes) at the library on Kori Road for her tremendous assistance with
finding a DVD on the Way of St. James. She was quite diligent and persevered
for a long time to find it for me. It was a difficult search! She found
"Discoveries Spain Pilgrimage Route" (914.6 Disc) which is very much appreciated.
She also helped me find several other materials and explained the classes the
library offers.

Branch: The teen summer reading program was outstanding! The book review where
all the kids got a chance to talk! The craft that went with the book! The snack
that went with the book! So much fun was had by all! The program was well put
together. My son had so much fun! Always left the program talking about the
book and started talking about the next week’s book. Well done, Mrs. Kim
(Bennett)! You make reading fun!
Main Library
- Circulation: Received Excellent Customer
Service from Tammy (Billings) when I got my new library card. Thank You!
Main Library
– Circulation: We visited the Main Library as a birthday wish of my 13 year old. While
checking out, Erin Tuzuner noticed my daughter likes teen mysteries.
Erin grabbed some books for my daughter to try. She showed me the digital
library. We are Clay residents who now pay $100/year for library usage. She
helped seal how great a deal it is. We've been with you since 2006 and will
continue on; especially thanks to Erin. Thank you!

Beaches
Branch: I have enjoyed this library from the time I moved back to Jax Beach as an
adult in '89 (born here). I raised two children with this library’s help and
resources. I was a single parent for
most of it and couldn’t afford Internet at home, which schools were asking
for. I now have my grandsons for most of
the summer and throughout the year as well.
Having longer hours and more days would benefit them and me
immensely. I appreciate and respect the
library and its role in the community.
Thank you for all these educational and fun filled years! Staff: Theresa Rooney, Andre Smith, Robbie
Crabtree, Julie Rekow, Gail Blumberg, Mary Hatfield, Amer Pierce, Theresa
Welch, Nicole Saville, Mary Wilson, Darlene Boda, Rachel Jones, Margaret

much. I visit quite often and my experiences are delightful. Staff: Kathleen Krizek,
LaKendra Hicks, Milicia Thomas Aquilla Stewart, David Stevenson, & Okey
Emejuru.
Highlands Branch: Cassy (Manning) was wonderful! Many thanks.
Main Library – Grand Reading Room:
Just
moved back from Tennessee. Not very computer knowledgeable. Adrian (Johnson) helped
me, made me feel comfortable and at ease. Two days ago I was here for the first
time. A beautiful, slender black lady helped me. She also was very nice. And
she stayed till I was comfortable and taught me a few new things about
computers.
Pablo Creek Branch: Chris (Tabur) in the children's section is very calm and helpful. He goes the extra mile to help out!

Highlands
Branch: Cassy (Manning) was wonderful! Many thanks.
Main –
Circulation: I would like to commend Mr. (Corey) Scott, the African American gentleman
at the front desk, who assisted me getting a library card. I recently relocated
to Jacksonville and he showed exemplary customer service skills by explaining
the requirements for obtaining a card and providing me with a temporary use
card. I have been to several branches and he is the first person to educate me
on the options. Congratulations to Jacksonville Public Library for having an
experienced and knowledgeable employee.
Murray Hill Branch: I would like
to say how much I appreciate and enjoy making use of your Hold System which
allows me to request an item from any of your libraries and pick it up at my
wonderful local branch in Murray Hill within a few days. The system works
perfectly, from ease of use to reliability of notification. I am sure people
have worked diligently to make it a reliable system, and they have succeeded!
It also appears that your employees on both ends of the process perform their
responsibilities pronto, because I am amazed how quickly I get the items I
request. Please tell the responsible and helpful staff at Murray Hill,
including Mr. Douglas Fair and others whose names I haven't learned, that you
heard from a very satisfied customer.
San Marco
Branch: A hand printed note from a young child: Dear Mr. M. (Monte Latham), Thank you so much for always being so nice and
helpful! Thank you for being so
thoughtful and picking out a book for me!
I can’t wait to read it. You make
coming to this library so much more enjoyable.
Thank you for your time!
Webb Wesconnett Branch: Brenda (Johnson), Dana (Curry), and Ayesha (Turner)

Argyle Branch: My experience at
the Jacksonville Public Library in the Oakleaf area on Old Middleburg Road was
amazing. Abby (Alberlyn Pabustan) is extremely kind and helpful. Thank you so much for
having employees like her.
Main
– Florida Collection: I would
like to commend one of your employees for offering me outstanding and
professional assistance…in the Florida Collection. Mr. (James) Brasfield assisted me with
viewing and saving some articles on microfilm. His assistance was invaluable to
my research and I couldn't have done it without him. Mr. Brasfield is an asset
to your organization.
Pablo Creek Branch: Excellent storytellers (Kim Smith and Chris Tabur), who
are so patient and great with all ages! Pre-literacy skills are well defined.

San Marco
Branch: I would like to comment on Amber (Pierce) who recently (May 5th) left San Marco branch
for a position at the Beaches Branch. I worked for 38 years at new car dealers
and 36 years at a private country club, so I am familiar with dealing with the
public. Amber was always helpful and courteous to me at the check-out area. I
observed her being the same way with other clients. She has excellent
people skills and is in general a very nice person. You at the Jax Public
Library system are very fortunate to have her in your employ.

Eastside, Main, and
SST: I would like to thank Shawn Norton, Lynn Jacobson, Kathleen Krizek and
Tracy Pigott for the time they spent helping me with the Overdrive download
on my kindle Fire. What a fantastic group of people.
Pablo
Creek Branch: I
just want to let you know that the Storytime and Crafts at the Pablo Creek
Library (Tristan Denmark's program Story and Art for Early Literacy) is
by far the best Children's program that we have ever attended! We have lived in
many different cities and attended their library programs but haven't seen or
experienced any that provide as much learning and educational enrichment as
this one. It is evident that you put a lot of time and effort into planning the
Children's programs. Thank you! Lisa
Highlands Branch:
Dearest Library Personnel, Miss Pat (Morrison) I just wanted to thank
you all for the services you help provide to the people of city of Jax. The
library has always been a research place for me. I was in high school in later
60's and graduated in 1971. The library personnel at Highlands Branch are very
knowledgeable, and always kind and helpful. I bring my grandkids there some ER
(early release) Wed. It is a blessing for me, and mine to continue to have the
wonderful services the library offers.
SST at Mandarin
Branch: I attended the Cloud Computing class presented by
Donna Peretzman at the Mandarin Branch location. I am a 1st time attendee
to the computer technology class series and benefited greatly from today's
session. I'm sure that I will attend future sessions. What a fabulous community
resource!

Wesconnett Branch: Add to Life is a community based facility.
Our goals are to aid the Jacksonville community with their family members; be
an alternative for institutional care and maintain a quality lifestyle. We were
contacted by Noah (Thomas) from Wesconnett public library regarding a
monthly activity time for our individuals. Noah brings topics of interest for
all ages. She comes up with a theme for each visit with corresponding books to
read. Each visit we listen to music, exercise, dance and make a craft. From her
first visit Noah has made a big impression on our individuals with her fun
spirit and hands on approach. She is very interactive with our clients. …
