SparkWalk, April 6, 2016 At Main

Above, Kathleen Brunner, Librarian III in Reference and Nonfiction at Main, gave tours of the library during JPL's SparkWalk; here she is(far right) with the first group. Below are pictured Matthew Taylor (NF),Kathleen, Katie Devanny (CAL)   and Judy Bradshaw (Learn to Read) who manned the p.r. table outside of Main for a while. The JPL SparkWalk table was also manned earlier by Kate Holmes and Matthew.
Kathleen said, "I hosted two tour groups from FSCJ’s Teaching and Learning conference, which was being held at the Hyatt Regency this week. They were a wonderful audience, and they especially appreciated the various artworks in the building. Some were from out of town, while other locals mentioned that they had been here before but were unaware of the myriad of joys and services offered, especially on the 4th floor and Conference Level.

"It was the REF/PER/NF department’s turn to man the JPL table for the 1st Wednesday ArtWalk, which happened to coincide with the SparkWalk. We had a celebration of Poetry Month on our table, plus information on upcoming JPL programs/events.  Next to us, CAL and Learn to Read were manning a table with information on their special services."

Thanks to Cranston Burney for the pictures.

Promoting JPL At Mandarin Arts Festival

Lynne Baldwin, KR Branch Manager, said, "Inclement weather did not keep library staff from participating in the Mandarin Arts Festival the weekend of April 19-20.  SOM's Margo Crafton and I manned the library table at the Festival all day Sunday which was our day off.  Library staff promoted upcoming library programming, the JPL Newsletter, and sold JPL bags. Quite a few people mentioned the Naturalization Ceremony at Mandarin Branch and the media coverage of the ceremony."

Pictured are (L/R) KR employees Sara Peretzman, Stacey Van Hoy, and Jessica Jones, who manned the library table at the Festival last Saturday.  Thanks to Olga Bayer, Community Relations and Marketing, for sending in the photo.

Local African American History Recounted By Author Mary F. M. Jameson

Thanks to NW Branch Manager Elaine Randolph (pictured below with Author Jameson) for this article:

"On September 18, a  Bradham-Brooks Branch audience was awed with the presentation Author Mary F. Mungen Jameson gave on her book Remembering Neighborhoods of Jacksonville, Florida: Oakland, Campbell’s Addition, East Jacksonville and Fairfield, the African-American Influence.

"Graduate students from the University of North Florida, their instructor, Dr. Chris Jansen, and Assistant Professor Dr. Sophie Maxis, as well as other members of the audience asked many questions about the book, including how Ms. Jameson got started in collecting her information, and why it is important to record history. The presentation was interesting, informative, and a good recount of local African-American history during the 1900’s."

Mandarin Branch Does It Up Big

KR Manager Lynne Baldwin has a go-get-em crew and wanted you to see their recent accomplishments:

"Congratulations to Mandarin Shelver Brittany Gonzales (center front above), who graduated from UNF with a BA in English and a minor in Creative Writing with a focus in poetry. Brittany has been working at Mandarin since 2007. The staff celebrated with a graduation party on April 19.

"KR hosted Crown Point Elementary School Library Night on Tuesday, April 30, with 75 guests in attendance. Kudos to Hongying Song, David Foster (in front in pic above), Frances Wickes, Anita Haller and Brittany Gonzales for organizing a great community program.

Southeast Says, "Viva El Clube Do Livro!"

Souheast Children's Librarian Senior Anita Haller reported on their March 1 special event.  "The Clube Do Livro presented the Southeast Branch with 150 new children’s books in Portuguese. To mark the event, they had a special reading of the new material for Portuguese and English speaking children on a Friday, 4-6 pm. This is the second year a special reading program has been held to present a new collection of Portuguese children’s books.

"The Clube Do Livro was created by Danielle Williams, Susan Lowell, and other Portuguese speaking parents who were concerned about supporting and expanding their children’s bilingual skills. They have been working with JPL for several years to develop our Portuguese children’s collection and to create special opportunities for presenting the language in story.  In previous years, the Clube Do Livro held monthly Portuguese-English story times at SE and Main Libraries, dramatizing Brazilian folktales into small playlets. Their lively interpretation was a big hit with all of the children.

"Last year, the group held a special fund raiser 'Feijojax 2012' to raise money and allow families to sponsor the purchase of their favorite children’s book for the library.  This group is an excellent example of how interested parents can work with the library to improve bilingual education."
