WB Team Takes On Halloween

WB Manager Michelle Petrin is proud of Willowbranch’s "pumpkin patch" and says, “Staff created themes such as Star Wars (The Death Star), Pokémon, and other Halloween creatures and classic characters, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, a delicious looking "donut" and more.  The painted pumpkins reflect the diverse interests and personalities at WB.  Thanks to everyone on staff for participating: Ryan Reid, Joe Gaskin, Kari Wright, Jason Brown, Christina Pope, Akeem Adell and our special guest, AYL Manager Carol Bunker."

Joe Gaskin, Library Associate Extraordinaire

Director Rogers told you about Joe Gaskin receiving an ALA Spectrum Scholarship recently.  Now Mr. Gaskin gives us insight into the person/attitude that is well able to receive such an award:

"The library is a sanctuary; at least it always has been to me. It was the place where a young boy could go to explore options that might never have been revealed just running around the neighborhood. It was a job where I earned my first paycheck as a shelver at the Murray Hill branch. I have spent a majority of my adult life working in the library. Other jobs came and went but I was repeatedly drawn back to the library system. Each return enabled me to excel and develop a greater connection to library services, so much so, that I found myself working on my master’s degree in Information Science. Since I was fortunate enough to receive the ALA Spectrum Scholarship, it has removed the financial barrier that could significantly slow my progress.  I plan to use this opportunity to improve myself and the service I provide to the public library system and the people it serves. Now, working as a Youth Services Associate at Willowbranch library (where I visited as a child), I strive to play the role in my community that so greatly influenced me.

"Libraries are one of the last true public spaces in our society that offers openly accessible information or just a place of respite for all. As a Library Associate, I spend a majority of my time creating programming for youth, a task that I have found truly fulfilling, especially reading stories, singing songs to toddlers or teaching high-school students how to fix their bicycles. I never thought that I would find myself playing a guitalele in front of a hundred singing and dancing toddlers each week, but I discovered the importance of providing an outlet for kids to learn to act silly. I believe it is crucial that our society provide youth with a safe space to explore, debate and challenge their interests outside of school. My motivation to receive a Master of Library and Information Science degree is based on my desire to expand my knowledge to help others expand theirs.

"I am so grateful for the egalitarian services that libraries provide to our society. As the division of wealth expands in our country, it is reassuring to know that libraries are maintained as free and open to all. I also believe that the library can offer a cross section of services such as housing assistance, mental health resources, alternative educational paths and small business assistance. I believe in the potential of a library to exist as more than just a repository for books. I see it as a space in which we can apply the knowledge acquired within—libraries with a car shop, open kitchen, gardens and so much more. I believe libraries should be more than a place where people can just read; libraries need to be spaces where knowledge can be put into practice.

"Upon completion of my degree, I plan to become a Librarian for JPL. I hope to add to the diversity and growth that the library and the City of Jacksonville needs, as it is rare to come across a black male librarian in the U.S., let alone in JPL. Libraries act as a safe space for many children of color, and I believe the faces of those working in safe spaces should reflect the population that inhabits them. I am excited to soon join the ranks of the less than 1,000 male African-American librarians in the United States, so that I can hopefully inspire more young black men to follow suit. We are at a moment in time where the purpose of a library is changing. I hope to be part of that change because a library is a sanctuary and so much more.

"I would also like to add that anyone considering taking the leap into an Information Science Master’s program, now is a great time to consider applying, as FSU has a 100% online program and they have waived their GRE requirement to apply for the program.  Additionally, the city has a great tuition reimbursement program and there are a lot of great scholarships out there!"

JPL Starts Reopening

The Main Library resumed customer service inside the building, June 3, 2020. Nine other branch libraries began curbside service only the same day--Beaches, Graham, Highlands, Mandarin, Pablo Creek, Regency Square, Southeast, Webb Wesconnett, and West.

Deputy Director Julie McNeil said, "Presently, the Main Library is open to the public to come in, Monday-Saturday, 10 am-6 pm.  Curbside service at the above branches is Monday-Thursday, 10 am - 7 pm, and Friday and Saturday, 10 am - 6 pm.  No Jacksonville Public Library Sunday service is available right now.

"Argyle, South Mandarin, Willowbranch, and University Park branches will add curbside service later this week, although the date has not yet been determined. Brentwood Branch Library will begin curbside service, June 15, 2020."

Terry Welch, a library clerk at Beaches Branch, coined a new word when she reported Theresa Rooney Nicole Saville, Dylan Franke, Robbie Crabtree, Amber Pierce, and she are the original JB "curbies." Terry said, "At first, service was slow but has picked up steam. Customers are happy to see us and we are happy to be back and serving them again."

Margaret Morford Retires W/Crowd Of Well Wishers

Below is a link with some delightful photos of Margaret Morford's retirement party, January 30, 2020, at Willowbranch Library.  Margaret retired from JPL after 15 years of service to the community on February 1 and City Councilwoman Randy DeFoor presented Margaret with a certificate of service and appreciation.

Pictured left are Margaret and her husband, Dr. Don Morford (R), as CW Manager Kathy Tekin (L) cuts the cake and Main retiree/now volunteer Theresa Barmer (center) waits for a slice. Main Library retiree, Main Manager Erica Brown and Christa Snow (most recently) along with other retirees, Executive team, colleagues, and friends wanted to honor Margaret and wish her well.  Prior to WB, Margaret worked at Main for several years.

(L/R) South Region Manager Keli Likins, Director Tim Rogers, and long-time Main Library Assistant Arthur Finley join Margaret in all the fun.

West Region Manager Lynne Baldwin contributed the blurb, link with pics, and snapped this shot of the four who did an excellent set-up for Margaret's retirement party, L/R: Marilyn Jordan, Beth Friederich, Christina Pope, and Kathleen Brunner. (What she doesn't say is Lynne donates retirement, anniversary, and birthday cakes for her area's celebrations.)

We're never met a nicer lady, Margaret, and we will certainly miss you at JPL.

WB Puts A Twist on the 4th

Willowbranch Library clerks, Christina Pope and Troy Eittreim, had fun working together to create a May 4th Star Wars Day display in the main Reading Room.

Their theme is “The Force Has Awakened a New Hope for Literacy. May the Fourth be with you as you read these books…”  Customers are enjoying stopping by to look at the display and grabbing a good book to check out and read. (Thanks to WB Manager Margaret Morford for the input.)

WB's Storytime

Willowbranch’s Youth Services team hosted a special story time across the street at the Riverside Avondale Community Garden, April 17, 2019. Dozens of families enjoyed Mr. Joe’s (Gaskin)stories and music, Ms. Jane’s (Griffo)arts & crafts, and an Easter egg hunt.  Special thanks to Kat Simi, Joe Gaskin, and Jane Griffo for organizing the event, and thanks as always to the Friends of Willowbranch Library for their support! The Garden Was Cooking!

Director Tim Rogers reads Go, Go Grapes!  by April Pulley Sayre to "all ears" kids.

Willowbranch Library collaborated with WB Friends President Joanne Henkle and hosted a morning Garden Storytime at Willowbranch Rose Garden Park, March 27, 2018.  Library Director Tim Rogers, Councilman Jim Love and YS Library Associate Joe Gaskin delighted the children and caregivers with book readings, songs and audience participation activities.
During March, WB Storytime has seen families exploring themes such as seeds, flowers, and gardening.  The children sprouted seeds to be planted in the WB Friends plot after this storytime. Region Manager Marshelle Berry said, "Joe looked the part in his overalls as he shared stories, songs, and activities about food from the garden.  Mr. Rogers and CM Love gave spirited readings and met with the many families before and after the program while others explored the garden.
L/R Director Tim Rogers, CM Jim Love, Friends of WB President Roxanne Henkle, JPL retiree Isabelle Pierre with flowers from the WB Friends; and Library Associate Joe Gaskin.

"Recent library retiree Isabelle “Miss Belle” Pierre had a big smile and thank-you for the gorgeous bouquet of flowers presented to her by Ms. Henkle on behalf of the WB Friends honoring her 11 years of service and dedication to WB families.  The first storytime was followed by another facilitated by Joe and both were well received.  ('Mr. Joe' will continue the WB storytime legacy.) There were 67 participants and with WB Manager Margaret Morford and all her staff working to make this event a big success, it certainly was just that."

Author Laura Lee Miller At JB & Coming To WB, PCR & Main

JB's Library Clerk Terry Welch reports, "JB hosted approximately 34 people who attended the Flamingo Book Club, January 30, 2018, to discuss the book, The Ice House by Laura Lee Miller. This was the author's second appearance at our book club and she is a delightful and inspirational speaker.
"Ms. Miller also held a writing workshop at JB, January 27, 2018 (15 attendees.)  She will also be holding a writing workshop, February 10, at WB and another, February 24, at PCR and she will be appearing at Main on March 3, 2018, as part of the Jax Book Fest!"

Terry keeps us tuned in to JB's latest--and she admits that authors are her favorite celebrities.

"Build A Better World" With A Strong Foundation

Families attending Willowbranch Library’s Summer Learning Kickoff Party, June 9, 2017, enjoyed carnival style games, dancing with “Ms. Belle”,  a scavenger hunt and refreshments.  To help “Build A Better World”, children signing up for Summer Reading Challenge received kid-sized “hard hats”.

“Mr. Joe”  (Joseph Gaskin) created a fun visual and everyone had a chance to help build a strong foundation by writing down how they would make the world a better place on a  paper brick to be added to the building.

Ryan Reid (L), the new WB YS Librarian II, stands beside the visual that depicts a building with books making up the foundation:  Books/reading are the tools we need to learn new things, become inspired, and find ways to help our communities.

Below, Dr. Jamie Self, Executive Director of the JPL Foundation joined Roxanne Henkle, President of the WB Friends to give the kids and their families a warm welcome.  Roxanne also directed them to the sign up area and helped serve refreshments.

WB's Librarian II Alison McCarty reports, "Willowbranch Library held its second Comic Con event, May 6, 2017.  As you see, Director Barbara Gubbin joined the costumed participants and others for an exciting day. With local comic artists, tap dancers, cosplayers, and Ghostbusters in attendance, the event was a HULK SMASH!  WB also SMASHED its attendance from last year with over 700 customers attending this year's event. Library staff
offered storytimes, crafts, bingo and other games for children, as well as board and video games and a scavenger hunt for all ages."

Friends of WB sponsored this year's theme buttons which were given to visitors. WB Friends President Roxanne Henkle was on hand with her steampunk bicycle, Barrymore. She said, "We are happy to have been a part of such an exciting event."

JB's Super Comic Con

Once again, Julie Rekow and Terry Welch from JB and Neil Sindicich, owner of Superhero Beach and Superhero Hive, walked in the Opening of the Beaches Parade, Saturday, April 29, 2017. Terry said, "This year, we were joined by members of Bold City Cosplay. It was awesome to see the superheroes interact with those watching the parade. You could hear shouts of 'Superman! Deadpool! Spiderman! Captain America! Wonder Woman!' all along the route. There were lots of pictures taken and hugs shared.

"Before the parade, Julie Rekow, Teen Volunteer Sophie Crissman from JB and Chris Tabur from PCR, along with Julie’s friend Leslie from Minnesota, and I participated in the Sandcastle Contest on Jacksonville Beach. Our creation was a Hulk Comic book cover to advertise the Comic Con that afternoon at JB and promote WB's planned for Saturday, May 6. We did not win, but a good time was had by all."

Willowbranch Reopens For A Happy Crowd, 11/14/15

After being closed for over a year for much needed, many faceted renovation, Willowbranch Library reopened Saturday, November 14, 2015, to exuberant customers waiting to revisit a favorite hub. Boys and girls quickly found their points of interest, whether it was a book, face painting, or hobnobbing with  Board Trustee Sybil Ansbacher (first pic below).

Region Manager Marshelle Berry welcomed everyone and introduced local author and historian, Wayne Wood. He told how the land where WB is was formerly a plantation and City Council overruled a mayor to purchase the property.  Much later, the oldest still-open branch in the system, the Mediterranean Revival-style library, opened November 17, 1930.

Council Member Jim Love read a Resolution from City Council; Director Barbara Gubbin spoke and told the crowd of about 300 that the father of a former Library Board member, Meridith Tousey, had done the building's stonework.  Board Trustee Sybil Ansbacher and Freinds of WB President Roxanne Henkle also welcomed everyone.

To view the opening ceremony, you can view three separate videos of the event on JPL's You Tube channel:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bECWmxPt70s&feature=youtu.be

Thanks to the senior administrative team and other employees who helped make this a memorable time for all the customers.

JPL appreciates Roxanne Henkle and the Friends of Willowbranch for planning this very successful event.

Willowbranch Shines Depiste The Rain

June 15, Willowbranch Library’s story hour focused on  water-- quite timely considering all the rain that we’ve been having lately.  We had a great turnout: 50 for the first session, followed by 39 during the second reading.  Miss Isabelle (Pierre) lead the children in singing and dancing, and then read the books Rain and The Falling Raindrop.
