Jax Youth Poetry Slam Hosts Teen Talent at Main
Main's Teen Department hosted the 8th annual Jax Youth Poetry Jam in the Hicks Auditorium on Saturday, April 21. Winners were Reginald Drake, first place; Desirae Lee, second place, and George Abraham, third place. Thirteen of the 16 participants are pictured here and their smiles reflect their enthusiasm for this competition.
The Main Library has hosted the past three JYPS events after collaborating with the founder, Tonya Smart.
This is a spirited, competitive spoken word event for talented and emerging young people, ages 11-18. During the competition, teens must perform original work in under three minutes. Each performace is scored by a panel of judges and the highest and lowest scores are dropped. The winners of the first round go on to compete in another round until the winners are determined.
JYPS was honored to have Councilman Don Redman as one of the judges, and Deputy Director Carolyn Williams was the announcer. Audience participation is encouraged to support the poets and they can boo or cheer the judges' scores.
