JPL Employees: A Gift That Keeps Giving

Main Library staffs gave ten baskets of food filled to the brim for the City's Thanksgiving food drive. Nicolle Burton had to keep buying more baskets for the food and she said, "What a wonderful problem to have."

Mandarin Branch employees gave eight baskets (this is the pic used above) and Support Services donated four food baskets for Thanksgiving.  One additional basket was given by a yet to be identified library (will fill this info in ASAP). A TOTAL OF 23 BASKETS OF FOOD FOR THE THANKSGIVING DRIVE FOR DANIEL'S KIDS!

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!

Here Comes The Bride

YS Librarian 1 Carol Bunker just transferred from Webb Wesconnett Branch and now works at West Regional.  She took time recently to swap marriage vows with her bridegroom, Charles Dean Geisinger--to the delight of some high flying attendees at her Marineland wedding, October 24, 2015.
About their honeymoon, Carol said, "We wanted to go to Europe for Thanksgiving but I recently promoted to Librarian I and knew I would not move to my new library until November, so we postponed it until spring 2016 when the weather will be warmer. In the interim, we had a mini-honeymoon and went to Halloween Horror Nights the Sunday after our wedding. On Monday, we went to Discovery Cove and Tuesday we went to SeaWorld where we met three Beluga whales on their Beluga Interaction Program. Their water was FREEZING but it was well worth it! We also got a little close to a sea lion with their "Sea Lions Up Close" tour. We closed the day with dinner at their Sharks restaurant. On Wednesday we went back to SeaWorld to see anything we may have missed on Tuesday.
The dolphin kissed the bride, too.

Staff Profile - November 2015

Nellie Harnisch appears to be a genteel lady and when one gets to know her, not only do you find gentility but a steeled warrior is revealed--one ready, even eager, to meet and overcome life's challenges. There is only one challenge that Nellie did not welcome, but she met it and overcame it, too. (Nellie is seen here with her hubby, Dennis, and two of her grandsons, Jacob and Johnny.)

Q: Were you employed elsewhere in JPL before your current position as Senior Accountant reporting to Deputy Director Mark Merritt?

A:  My career with JPL began as a library clerk at SE Branch in December 2007 where I enjoyed working with customers at the front desk.  After work, I attended the University of Phoenix and later received my Master’s degree in Accounting.  I already had a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and had been Chief of Accounting for a company in my country of origin, Russia.  Nevertheless, I recognized my need for further education to get my dream job in the U.S.

After my year and a half at SE, I took and passed the city’s test to receive a promotion and began working at DU as a Children’s Library Associate.  My own children were adults by this time (my daughter was 26 and my son, 23) so it was lots of fun interacting with kids again.  After a year and a half at DU, I transferred to UPK and stayed there two years as a Library Associate, conducting computer classes.  I have warm memories of working with my UPK family and have maintained a good working relationship with UPK employees who are still with JPL.

I like a challenge and when the opportunity came, I took a test offered by JPL, passed it, and joined the E-library specialists team.  In this interesting position, I promoted E-services and continued conducting computer classes.  E-books were being offered at JPL during this time and customers had a lot of Q’s.  Our E-library specialists did--and continue to do--a tremendous job promoting E-books and other E-services. I am very proud to have worked with them for a year and a half.

In June 2013, my “year and a half” stints changed when I took the Senior Accountant position in JPL’s Finance department.  I had received my Master’s degree in Accounting and was ready to continue my dream career in Accounting!  Mark Merritt and HR decided to hire me and I’ve been in this position till now.

Under Mark Merritt’s distinguished leadership, I am involved in all JPL Finance activities and maintain spreadsheets, prepare and monitor JPL’s budget, create monthly and annual reports; process all library purchases and invoices, conduct audits, process checks, and work with the JPL Foundation and with the city’s Accounting and Procurement divisions.  I like my many responsibilities very much.  This is me, my chosen career, my dream fulfilled.
Of course, I could not do my work without the excellent supervision of Deputy Director Mark Merritt and the rest of JPL Finance team’s contributions—Jim Skulsky, Darlene Nicholson, and Leila Wertman.  I also want to acknowledge the JPL Foundation for their daily contributions to the ongoing success of JPL’s Finance department.

Q:  How have all the additional hours for FY2016 impacted your work?

A:  Starting November 14, the additional FY 2016 hours allocated by the City will be in place.  This affects me very positively, both professionally and personally. With the 88 additional hours at 21 branches, we will incur more invoices as JPL begins to meet the needs for more programs, more collections, an additional 11 positions and increases in needed security and custodial service, etc. We have a new challenge in providing all these aspects of additional customer service and I’m excited about that. After all, my family and I are avid JPL customers, too.

Q:  What major obstacle in your life have you experienced and what helped you most to overcome the hurdle?

A:  This was one challenge I did not welcome and it was THE major obstacle in my life: cancer.  One year ago, the disease seemed to come out of the blue and it affected not only my personal life but my career, too.  I discussed the ramifications with my family--at home and at JPL (many of my waking hours are spent here with staff and I consider them family).

FMLA time was granted for me to have surgery and follow up with chemo and radiation. I returned to work six weeks later thinking that was the end of it.  Not so! I had to continue the treatments.  My FMLA time was almost depleted so I asked for official permission to continue working at home.  Permission was granted and I was able to work full time online daily using the city’s remote system.  Director Barbara Gubbin and Deputy Director Mark Merritt were so supportive during this time as was the Finance team—Jim Skulsky, Darlene Nicholson, Leila Wertman, and Toccaro Tracy (a relatively new employee).  All of them were so helpful and without their professional help and their and my family’s understanding and cooperation, I would not have hurdled this awful obstacle in my professional and personal life.

My job gave me the incentive to conquer cancer, no matter what.  In June of this year, I was able to come back to the office and continue my full time daily duties.  Today, I am totally recovered, feel great, and have lots of energy: battle won!  I will never forget this chapter in my life and I am very grateful to God and both my personal and work families.
Q:  If you were not a Senior Accountant, what career path would you probably have taken?

A:  Working at JPL in any other position is very interesting and exciting, as I mentioned earlier.  It is fun to interact with people, have the opportunity to meet someone new, constantly learning, being exposed to new books and information, the world, and life in general.

Simple Pleasures

A mutual admiration society was immediately in place when Deputy Director Jennifer Giltrop and this dolphin smiled at each other and swapped high fives during her recent vacation in Mexico.

Lot Of Fun At WBK

October 30th, WBK held its fall festival hosting 21 children. The festival included hot dogs, popcorn, and lots of candy. Games included ring toss, pumpkin throw, guess the amount of candy, candy bingo and face painting. First time face painting was done by Kimberly Cherry.

Chris Eaton Wins Award

Chris Eaton, Talking Books' Librarian II, is one who consistently gives his best and not one to vie for a spotlight. However, the spotlight finds him sometimes unexpectedly.
About the Spirit of the ADA 2015 Jack Gillrup Award he won, October 25, Chris said, "I didn’t know I was going to win until I did. I knew I was nominated but there were two others also nominated."

The award was presented to a very surprised Chris at an event at the Jacksonville Zoo by Beth Meyer, Division Chief of COJ Disabled Services, and Tyler Morris, Director of Marketing and Development at the Independent Living Resource Center (ILRC).

Talking Books was nominated  for hosting the Braille-a-thon (a first and a real win for JPL and reported here earlier this year). Ms. Meyer mentioned in an earlier letter to Director Barbara Gubbin, "...The Library’s Talking Book Program and Chris Eaton were unanimously voted by the Mayor's Disability Council (MDC) as  the recipient of the 2015 Jack Gillrup Community Award!..."

The award reads: "The ILRC of Northeast Florida and the City of Jacksonville's Disabled Services Division recognize Chris Eaton of the City of Jacksonville's Talking Books & Special Needs Library as the 2015 Jack Gillrup Community Leader Award Winner for his assiduous leadership within the disability community of Northeast Florida."

See, Chris, we're not the only ones who know you do your best--and that for some who need it the most.  THANK YOU!

If Not Candy, Pizza, Anyone?

JPL joined other businesses in Downtown Vision's "Trick or Treat on the Street", October 30, 2015. Between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on Friday, participating businesses and restaurants set up, either inside or outside their storefronts, and handed out candy, coupons, and other promotional goodies. At the Main Library, each department handed out candy to people in Halloween costumes.

In addition to the "Trick or Treat on the Street," Stephanie Miller and Marie Myers of Main Children's department organized their annual trick-or-treat scavenger hunt.  When trick-or-treaters (up to age 12) went to each department for candy, they had to find the answer to a question on the scavenger hunt. When kids finished the scavenger hunt, they returned to Children's and selected a free book.

Charlie Parks (age 4) came into the Teen Department dressed like a pizza so Laura Minor said she showed him their fun and fully loaded "pizza" that Mia Clark made years ago. Charlie enthusiastically posed for photos.  Great shot, Laura.

Halloween At Main

In part or total costume, (L/R) Lynne Baldwin, Emma Pancho, Tia Samuels, Karen Deas, Kathleen Brunner and Lilia Simonton were ready to treat kids to candy, along with other participating businesses downtown, October 30, 2015.  You can envision their character representations, can't you?
Here's another view of Main staffs who were ready to participate in handing out candy treats. Kathleen Brunner (far left) is, well you know by the halo; Chris Cavan donned a tam and now she's a Frenchwoman; Katie Goldman, to the right of Chris, and Theresa Bascom (far right) dressed as cats, including pointed ears, whiskers and long tails, which the pic does not do justice.  Tammy Billings is a police lady for the day; handcuffs, anyone?

SLEEP ONE HOUR LONGER SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 2015

YEA!  TIME CHANGES SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 2015, SO SET YOUR CLOCKS B-A-C-K ONE HOUR BEFORE YOU GO TO BED SATURDAY NIGHT. (Remember: "fall back" & "spring forward".)

Spooks Invite Kids To KR For Halloween

SE Region Youth Services Librarian Carisia Rooney and KR's YS Library Associate Alison Pulley are shown frozen solid by these spooks. Obviously, they don't know that these are fun loving ghosts who want to invite kids, tall and small, to come "haunt" the Mandarin Branch with them this Saturday, October 31.

We Remember & Honor Our Heroes

October 29, 2015, Jacksonville's Fire and Rescue Department’s Sea of Blue Fallen Firefighter Memorial March honored local firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty. Hundreds of off-duty firefighters in full dress uniform marched a 1.5 mile route through the streets of downtown, followed by a few rescue vehicles.  As many as could of City employees (most remembered to wear the requested red for remembrance) took a few minutes to honor these heroes and lined the streets.  The helmets of those killed in the line of duty were held by other firemen in the march.

It was the honor and privilege of a few of us to be there and remember that if it weren't for our firemen, police, military and others who unselfishly take the protective "shield" for our well being, where would we be?

Study Buddy Makes Public Appearance

Librarian II Chris Eaton works in the Talking Book /Special Needs Library and knows how to get double duty out of most anything.  He said, "Some months ago Nate Fuller gave me the Jaguars Study Buddy and told me that I needed to take a picture with it before passing it on to someone else.
"I never really found a good opportunity until Sunday’s Spirit of the ADA event at the zoo, October 25. So I took a pic of our display table there with Study Buddy (peeping over the table, next to the red bowl) overseeing the table." ...Who's going to get the Study Buddy next, Chris?

Kids Like NW's Halloween Pizza Party

Gloria Buenavista said, "Northwest had an exciting day for preschoolers, October 27.  We planned a Halloween Pizza Party for the kids and they came in costume. They enjoyed storytime with Sheenae and we made a laser maze for them to crawl through and had blocks for the little ones to play with. Thanks to Michelle Petrin for bringing the pizza and candies."

Brentwood Holds Fall Carnival

Betty Williams, NS Library Associate Senior, said, "Brentwood's Fall Carnival, October 20, attracted 70 participants who enjoyed balloon twisting by the Balloon Lady. 'Too cool' teens and some parents also waited in line to wear 'Curious George' and 'Hello Kitty' balloons on their head.  Brent the Library Bear asked participants to guess the number of pompoms in the plastic bear for a prize.  There was a pumpkin toss and some enjoyed tossing balls into pumpkin cutouts for points.  In the Gone Fishin’ game they used a pole to 'fish' for balls to get points, and in the ring toss, rings were thrown over various sized cylinders for points.  There was also a word scramble game using fall words. Prize bags were awarded to the highest scorers and the closest pompom count.
"Friends of  the Brentwood Library manned some of the game stations and sponsored the hot dogs and drinks. Navy Federal Credit Union manned a game station and gave away frisbees, key chains, and glow necklaces. Staff popped popcorn, cooked hot dogs on the indoor grill, and went downstairs to work the public service desk. A special thank you to our Library Supervisor, Patricia Morrison, for those cute decorated prize bags and candy."

Some Can Wear It; Some Could Not

Director Barbara Gubbin (center) is pictured with two other ladies (identities unknown) at the Friends of the Murray Hill Branch "Dinner with the Dead", Saturday evening, October 24, 2015. Ms. Gubbin dressed as Isadora Duncan, including a long, flowing scarf, which Isadora was famous for wearing. Director Gubbin, however, did not ride home in an open roadster.

Congrats to DU For 30 Years Of Service

Kristi Dorney, Highlands Branch Manager, recaps DU's big day, "Highlands Regional Library celebrated 30 years of service, October 24, with the theme 'Preserving Our Past, Forward to the Future'. Guests were greeted at the front door by friendly scarecrows who complemented the library's fall decorations. The celebration included a ribbon cutting for DU's new E-classroom, face painting, clowns, balloon twisting, crafts, and door prizes. Everyone enjoyed delicious sweets (including the 30th anniversary cake) and drinks served with a background of 1980's music.
L/R are Board Trustee Mario Payne, CM Katrina Brown, Board Chair Erin Skinner, Director Barbara Gubbin, and DU Branch Manager Kristi Dorney are pictured at the E-classroom ribbon cutting. Region Manager Jane Harris and Executive Assistant Andrew Herron also attended,.

"Councilwoman Katrina Brown presented the branch with a resolution of service from the City Council. After remarks from Board Chair Erin Skinner, she and CM Brown cut the ribbon for the E-classroom.

"I wish to thank my staff at the Highlands Branch Library for the success of the 30th Anniversary event. Everyone pitched in to help in some way. I wish to particularly thank Mia Brack for assisting the custodian in cleaning up the huge mess our dumpster diver made just hours before the celebration. The event would not have been so successful but for the incredible vision and hard work of Felecia Battle and her team. Felecia created the theme and vision for the day and Farryn James and Barbara “Bunny” Fritz helped her to realize it. I am so fortunate to have had such a great team for the anniversary. Thank all of you so much."

Thanks to  Deputy Director Jennifer Giltrop for the pics.

Beautiful Listeners To A Fish Story

Margaret (Peggy) Crawford, Brentwood Branch's YS Librarian III, tells us,  "Eighteen children, some of NS’s favorite patrons, participated in our Read for the Record program recently.  They listened to Not Norman, A Goldfish Story, by Kelly Bennet. The youth from the All About Kids preschool are regular attendees at our Stories for Young Children programs."

Who Woulda Thunk?

Alison Pulley reports, "Mandarin Branch Library created a Read for the Record Display featuring the title character, Norman the goldfish. Books detailing the care and keeping of pet fish were a surprising hit and flew off of the shelves the whole month long."

Scarecrows Don't Scare But Do Make Kids Smile

Eastside entertained 25 students during the “Fall Into Eastside” program, October 23. EB welcomed the fall season as students engaged in poetry reading with expression, a candy corn race, a candy apple craft, and a scarecrow building competition while sipping apple cider.  The scarecrow competition winner was Scarecrow Freddie in the purple attire. (Thanks to  Sharon Whitt for the blurb and pic.)

Leery Of The Eerie Until We Get The Facts

Library Associate Christie Rogers said, "SOM entertained 15 parents and children in our Who Are the People in Your Neighborhood program, October 21, 2015. Marsha Daniels, a local bat enthusiast, shed some light, including pictures and videos, on some nocturnal creatures: bats. The children were excited to talk about bats, learn what they like to eat, and how they benefit people (among other habits, they eat mosquitoes)."

One More For Very Good Measure

Accountant Senior Nellie Harnisch, who works at the Main Library in the Finance department, celebrated a wonderful addition to their family, October 5, 2015. Nellie's daughter, Juliette Wooten, and husband, Clay, presented their daughter, Alexandria, with a brother, Sidney.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OF YOU FROM ALL OF US!

Kudos From Customers

Argyle Branch: Laurie (Norman) was a big help to me today.

Beaches Branch:  I just wanted to let you know how helpful Suzanne Neikirk was in helping me track down a returned book. Her assistance made my day much better and helped me breathe easier.

Main Library – Children’s: I wrote this review on Yelp about my WONDERFUL experience ...Especially impressed with the Librarian Marie (Myers). I travel to the Main Street Library WEEKLY! Free books… My baby has finally reached the important pinnacle of LIKING it when we read to her! Besides Dr. Seuss, what kind of books are interesting for both the baby AND the parents? I was at a loss so I asked the librarian, Marie, for some advice. Marie's eyes sparkled and I clearly saw the ignited fire of a librarian on a mission! She quickly grabbed books left and right, passionately describing how humorous each one was and how we'd enjoy them even if the baby couldn't understand them yet. Our favorites that Marie recommended were… She was SO helpful that I have decided to come to her on a regular basis so she can load me up with more entertaining children's books! I was dazzled by her knowledge and passion. Marie even took a family photo of "baby's first library trip!" Not only is the library lovely to visit in person, but you can also go online and choose what books you are interested in. Once the book is chosen, you select which library location you want those books sent to. In less than a week (sometimes longer if there's a queue for the book) you will receive an email notifying it's ready at your library of choice for a pick up! ...

Mandarin Branch: Mr. David (Foster) in the children's section is the nicest, most helpful staff person in your library, possibly in the whole Jacksonville library system. He remembers my kids and me, asks after their school lives, and is able to make recommendations for clubs and events they might like. He is far and above the friendliest person...

Pablo Creek Branch:  William (Bill) Figlietti was an amazing help to my son, assisting us in our home education program.

SE's Teens Make Candy Sushi

SE's Anjelica Bencomo reports on their October 16 Teen program, Candy Sushi Making, "We had a sugar-filled happy time with 17 teens participating and they were eager to help and set up. "

It's Bosses' Day!

October 16 was Bosses Day--a day for staffs to thank their bosses and that they did. Some employees at the Main Library showed their appreciation to Lynne Baldwin, Main Public Services Manager, with a bouquet of flowers and Michael Sullivan, Main/Urban Region Manager, received a gift basket and balloon.  Both Lynne and Michael reflect their appreciation in these photos.

Nicolle Burton and Donna Crowther served up a scrumptidelicious luncheon to a few VIP's, too, on Bosses' Day.  The honored guests included Library Director Barbara Gubbin, Deputy Director Jennifer Giltrop, Assistant Director for Public Services Julie McNeil, Michael Sullivan, Manager of Strategic Initiatives Richard Mott, and Executive Assistant Andrew Herron.  Lynne Baldwin had to be elsewhere and was missed but certainly is appreciated for her many contributions to JPL.

THANKS, ALL YOU BOSSES, FOR ALL YOU DO TO MAKE JPL THE CONTINUING SUCCESS IT IS.

NW Partners w/Rufus Payne Elemenary for Literacy Night

Bradham Brooks Northwest Branch partnered with Rufus E. Payne Elementary for their Family Literacy Night. Sheenae Nelson read a story to the little kids and Michelle Petrin read to the older kids.  Gloria Buenavista prepared a library information table. There were 127 in attendance and to top it off, Batman made an appearance.  (Sorry, his pic refuses to post.) Thanks to NW Library Associate Gloria Buenavista for the input and pic.

It's Bosses Day!

Cynthia Simmons, Main's Clerical Services Supervisor, was pleasantly surprised to receive this beautiful arrangement from the Circulation Team in honor of Bosses Day, October 16!

Author of Topgun Days At JB

The Beaches Branch hosted author Dave "Bio" Baranek, October 3, 2015.  Dave was a Navy Flight Officer who became an instructor at Topgun, the Navy’s elite Fighter Weapons School, and was one of the pilots who worked on and flew in the movie Top Gun. After an interesting talk, Dave signed copies of his book Topgun Days about his experiences and we showed the movie Top Gun, starring Tom Cruise. It was a great beginning for the month of October when the Sea and Sky Spectacular returns to Jacksonville Beach!

An interesting piece of trivia:  For those old enough to remember Ranger Hal and Skipper Ed,  Ranger Hal was Dave’s dad.  (Thanks to Terry Welch for the blurb and pic.)

Folio's Flowers Go To JPL

In its current issue of Folio Magazine's "Brickbats and Flowers" the Jacksonville Public Library was awarded this beautiful bouquet, which is displayed on the Main Library's first floor for all to admire.  In case the print is too small, the sign reads, "As a result of a $l million budget increase, the libraries will increase operational hours by 10 percent in locations where residents depend on the libraries' resources the most.  Thank you, Mayor and Council."

Friends Groups: It's Nice To Be Recognized

Above, some of the members of the Friends of the Beaches Branch Library gather with their representative, Virginia Maxted, who holds the Board of Library Trustees Resolution presented to all Friends groups representatives that were present at the Board of Library Trustees meeting, October 8, 2015, in honor of National Friends of the Library Week, October 18-24, 2015  Other Friends groups representatives who attended the Board meeting and received the Resolution were: Melvin Turnage (Brenwood), Margaret Smith (Friends of JPL); Roxanne Henkle (Willowbranch); Judy Klein (Murray Hill); and Celia Miller (Graham Branch).  (Also refer to the article posted on this blog, October 8, to view the content of the Resolution presented to the Friends at the Board meeting, October 8.
